What do you get when you cross a Miata with a Tesla?
Welcome to my EV Miata project page. Here are the stats:
Who: Jordan Higham, age 15
What: 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata
What, Part 2: Convert the Miata to 100% electric. Make it fast.
Why: Because I can’t afford a Tesla
How much did the Miata cost? My life savings, plus I still owe my parents some money
Where: In my garage
My dad and I have been talking about converting a car to electric ever since he realized he could either get a Tesla or send me to college some day. After doing a bit of research, we decided to convert a 1999 Miata, using parts and instructions from evmiata.com (more on that later). We searched for just the right car for a long time, and, in January 2012, we found one in San Diego, about 8 hours from where we live.
- Here I am in the Miata the day after we drove it home. That’s my mom driving. Hey I don’t have my license yet!
My goal is to have the car converted to electric by the time I get my driver’s license. That’s February 14, 2013….
The first step is to pull the engine out. But for the moment, my parents and older sister are having too much fun driving the ICE (internal Combustion engine) version. Hey! You guys have your own cars! Leave mine alone!
